Pentagons And Ice Cream Cones: My Makes For The Home Sweet Home Fabric Tour

As a fabric blogger for Poppie Cotton Fabrics, I’m very lucky to be able to select upcoming fabric collections to sew with. So when the chance came to create with the Home Sweet Home fabric range by Elea Lutz, I jumped at it. Elea always designs her collections with the cutest little motifs and the sweetest colour palette. Look at those tiny houses, blue birds, cherries and strawberries!

Using Elea’s fabrics means you can’t stop at just one project. So for this fabric tour, I made two! I featured English paper piecing (EPP) in both, because it’s the perfect way to fussy cut fabric and show off the darling motifs. If you’re new to EPP, you can read more at my beginner’s tutorial.

The Pentagon Bowl

I loved designing this project, because it’s a fantastic way to showcase a range of different fabric prints. If you’d like to make your very own structured English paper pieced Pentagon bowl, please enter your details below.

The Pentagon Bowl is a great portable project because it’s completely hand stitched and very straight forward to assemble. I selected 12 of my favourite fabrics from the collection to baste my pentagon shapes first. Look at those cute kitties, birds and bunnies below!

Next, I stitched the papers together to create an inner bowl and an outer bowl. This design is different from traditional EPP, because the papers are not removed. This gives the EPP bowl structure and strength when both bowls are whipstitched together. I just love how this little bowl turned out.

These bowls make a lovely addition to your sewing space. They’re great for holding quilting clips, or fabric scraps and thread snips. You can see more versions HERE. Let me know if you make one!

Night Before Christmas Stocking

For my second project in the fabric tour, I created a new version of my Night Before Christmas Stocking. I’ve made many of these over the years and they’ve been one of my most popular designs. But for this version I wanted to change things a bit. And in doing so, I realised that it turned into a bit of a time saving hack.

handmade Christmas stocking sewing pattern featuring English paper piecing, front pocket and felt mouse

The original design features a hand-stitched hexagon front with a cute little pocket to hold a tiny wool felt mouse. The back is strip patchwork using four different prints. The pattern includes the instructions and templates for the stocking and the mouse.

This time I wondered how the design would look using whole fabrics for the front and back. I selected two of the Cheery Floral prints to create front and back panels. After I had quilted both with simple cross-hatching, my need for a bit of embellishment and bling took over! So of course I had to add some more fun details. Here’s the back in red and the front with my extras – ice cream cone EPP flowers!

To learn more about the EPP flowers and yoyo’s I added to the front, you can read all about it on my BLOG POST. But basically I selected five fabrics to sew two flowers first.

After they were stitched together I removed the papers and appliquéd them to my stocking front. Then of course I decided they needed some fabric yoyo or Suffolk puff centres. You can make your own using the 3.5” template provided at my FREE TUTORIAL.

The final addition was to include some bright red rick rack trim on the top of the stocking and hanging loop. All of these additions were quick to include, but helped make the stocking more vibrant and fun. What do you think?
