‘Create’ Fabric Tour
Welcome to my stop on the fabric tour for ‘Create’; the debut fabric range by my dear friend Kristy Lea of Quiet Play who designs for Riley Blake. If you know Kristy’s work at all, you’ll know she loves rainbows! So when I first caught a glimpse of this range, I wasn’t surprised by the bold and bright hues and ‘rainbowy’ goodness. Look at all that colour!
I was so honoured when Kristy asked me to join the tour! It has given me the chance to true something new and different. Being a pretty pastel girl myself, it has been really interesting to work with these fabrics. They’re fun and cheery and the colours are vibrant and varied. The wide range of jewel tones in this collection means there’s a shade for every project I could dream of, so they’re a welcome addition to my stash. They also pair beautifully with my favourite Aurifil Aurifloss (six stranded, cotton, embroidery thread).
Kristy is a foundation paper piecing queen, and her bee is one of her signature designs. As soon as I saw that bees featured in this range, I knew exactly what project I wanted to sew for this tour. My ‘Serious Sewist’s Pin Cushion‘ design features a felt bee on the top. And the pin cushion is also made with an English paper pieced hexagon. As hexies also feature in this fabric range, I felt like it was a perfect match!
To start, I hand stitched the mulitcoloured hexagon for the top. (If you’d like to know more about English paper piecing, you can read more HERE.)
I added a little appliqué bee from wool felt, and then appliquéd the panel to the backing fabric. I also added some hand quilted details.
Boxing the corners and assembling the pin cushion was the best part. I love seeing when a project comes together. Isn’t it sweet?
Here’s the completed pin cushion with a few of the other prints in the range. And I couldn’t resist fussy cutting a hexagon bee. Cute, right?
The pattern for this project has been released and now also includes a super cute scissor charm. You can read more about the original design HERE.
If you’re interested in purchasing this gorgeous range, it’s available now! I’ve included links to some of my favourite Aussie stores below, but be sure to ask for it at your local quilting store – Create by Kristy Lea for Riley Blake.
