New Makes For The Homegrown Preserves Collection From Poppie Cotton

It’s always wonderful having the opportunity to sew with brand new fabric collections, so that we can showcase them for makers. As a fabric ambassador for Poppie Cotton, I’ve selected some stunning ranges to sew with over the years. Today I’m sharing the Homegrown Preserves Collection designed by Sheri McCulley which is shipping to stores in September, 2026.

Sheri describes her collection as “designs that capture the warmth and whimsy of freshly picked fruits, buzzing bees, and cheerful market offerings. From delicate wildflowers dancing with strawberries and cherries to neatly arranged canning jars, each design evokes the joy of harvest and the simple pleasures of homemade goodness.“

I was so drawn to the pastel colour palette when I first saw this collection. The main Farmer’s Market print (featured in the centre of the image below) is perfect for fussy cutting and featuring in appliqués, English paper piecing and more. I also love the bees, flowers and fruit motifs in many of the designs.

Fabric Yoyos

As a fun little warm up, I decided to create a collection of hand stitched fabric yoyos or Suffolk puffs with some of my favourite ‘Homegrown Preserves’ prints. These cute little gathered fabric puffs are ideal adornments for so many different projects. If you haven’t made them before, they’re so simple. Jar Covers

Another very simple project I created were these fabric covers for preserve jars. I’ve been making jam at home and we also keep bees, so these jars contain strawberry jam and our own honey. I wanted to make some sweet covers for the jars that I gift to family and friends.

If you’d like to create some like this, follow these easy instructions. For each cover, you’ll need; fabric, stabiliser, pinking shears (or zigzag scissors), cotton lace trim, needle and thread to match the lace colour, embroidery floss and needle in a contrasting colour, and ribbon.

To assemble the cover…

Create a circle template from a round object with a diameter that is around 3 inches (7.5cm) wider than the diameter of the jar lid. (My jar lids were 3” wide, so my circle template was 6” or 15cm wide). You might like to download and save my Fabric Yoyo Template for this.
Secure embroidery or fabric stabiliser to the wrong side of your chosen fabric. This step is optional but it gives the fabric more structure and prevents fraying.
Use an erasable marker to trace the circle template onto the wrong side of the fabric.
Cut out the circle with pinking shears to help prevent fraying.
Hand stitch cotton lace around the outside circumference of the circle (1/4” or 5mm in from the fabric edge). Join the ends well.
Use all 6 strands of a contrasting coloured embroidery floss (I used variegated floss) to hand stitch a running stitch over the lace edge. This creates a decorative finish.
Once complete, tie the cover in place over the jar lid using a pretty ribbon and trim the ends.

These covers are so quick and easy to make, so they’re a lovely way to decorate homemade preserves or jams, especially if you’re gifting them to loved ones. The covers can also be reused!

Another quick and easy project for this sweet fabric, is to whip up some ‘Scrappy Happy Needle Books‘ to gift to your sewing friends. This Molly and Mama pattern is perfect for highlighting cute motifs and for using your favourite trims and precious saved notions. I love making these!
