Quilt Big – Blog Tour

Welcome to my little blog, Molly and Mama. If it’s your first time visiting, I’m so pleased to share my little creative home with you. There’s lots of tutorials, projects, reviews and ponderings about all things quilting, embroidery, wool felt and more. It’s great to have you here.

Today is my stop on the Quilt Big* blog tour. Jemima (of Tied With A Ribbon fame) and I have bonded over a love of all things quilty and sparkly! I was so honoured when she asked me to join her blog tour for her second book, Quilt Big with The Quilting Company. And it was a special day when this book arrived. I poured over the pages, trying to decide what to make first!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I’m not really into big quilts. I like my makes small, with sweet details. But rest assured, this book isn’t about big quilts as much as it is about upsizing traditional quilt blocks. Bigger blocks mean quicker quilts. And I like that!

Quilt Big is carefully organised into well laid out chapters that include the quilting basics, upsizing quilts and quilt blocks. Then it details how to sew a large range of traditional and straightforward quilt blocks like flying geese, the log cabin, Missouri star and many more. Chapter four transfers those blocks into quilt patterns and home decor projects. There’s even a chapter dedicated to backings!

I’m not really a traditional quilter, so I found this book really informative. The layout is excellent, the instructions are clear and the projects are quick to make. I decided to make a modified version of the Mosaic quilt on page 120, albeit a smaller one!

With only four blocks, this little lap quilt came together quickly and easily. I strayed a little from my usual palette and chose some quite bold floral prints from the Tilda Sunkiss range and paired them with some lovely cotton chambray solids. I think the effect is striking though. And finding that stripe fabric for the binding in my local quilt store just made it!

My pre-teen has already claimed this quilt, and I have to agree that it matches her bedroom (and that funny looking soft toy on the bed) quite well. Lucky Coco!
